He approaches a castle, but on his way up the stairs, is entranced by a bush of perfect roses unaffected by the weather. Admiring the beauty, he plucks one, and knocks on the door of the castle to ask for shelter. When no one answers, he makes his own way in and settles down in front of the fire, eventually dozing off. He is discovered by the master of the house- Mateus, of the forgotten Palamecia family. The man is half human, half animal, and in his rage at finding a stranger in his house, drags Firion to a cold and disused tower of the castle, locking him in. The two humans still left in the castle, Leon and Maria, sympathise with Firion, feeling trapped as the only people who still cared about Mateus. They agree to help Firion escape, whilst also trying to draw Firion and Mateus closer together, with Firion being their only chance to break Mateus' curse.

He is discovered by the master of the house- Mateus, of the forgotten Palamecia family. The man is half human, half animal, and in his rage at finding a stranger in his house, drags Firion to a cold and disused tower of the castle, locking him in. The two humans still left in the castle, Leon and Maria, sympathise with Firion, feeling trapped as the only people who still cared about Mateus. They agree to help Firion escape, whilst also trying to draw Firion and Mateus closer together, with Firion being their only chance to break Mateus' curse.
