What is the WIP Big Bang?

Good question! This is a Big Bang with one goal in mind: to clean out your fanfic drafts folder. These are stories that were unfinished for whatever reason, that authors returned to and completed, and the art that goes with them!

What is the WIP Reverse Bang?

It’s similar to the regular Big Bang, except it’s for artists to finish WIP artwork (either traditional art, digital art, fanvideos, fanmixes or filk) and get a fic in exchange of at least 2000 words.

Is there anything not allowed?

No. Problematic fandoms are fine. RPS/RPF is fine. Incest pairings are fine. Graphic violence is fine. Non-con/dubcon is fine. Things like that I know have been hinted at in questions asked and as long as you tag for them, we’ll allow it. Also, canon settings with mostly OCs and original fic/art is also allowed (though it is harder to pair you with someone for fic/art). We just ask that it be tagged properly with any content warnings you would deem fit and be given the appropriate rating for the level of sex/violence there is in the fic. Just bear in mind that while original work is allowed you may not get art for it.

How many fics/art pieces can we sign up for?

We absolutely don’t mind multiple sign-ups; I know one year someone submitted 50 fics to finish, and got at least half of them done. We just ask that when you sign up with more than one fic/art piece you give each fic/art piece a unique user ID (please do not use the same ID for all your fics/art pieces...it’s important to have different IDs for the check-ins).

Will I get emails about the bang?

We do send out some emails, mostly for fic snippets and art/fic claims and to ensure communication between authors and artists, but please do NOT rely on getting an email to remind you of due dates. We currently do not keep an updated email list of participants, so we only send individual emails as needed rather than mass emails. Please keep this fact in mind when deciding whether you want to participate; it is your responsibility to keep track of the schedule and know when check-ins and other events in the Big Bang are taking place. If you need a reminder about due dates, the FAQ/Schedule is pinned on top of the Tumblr and Dreamwith blogs and we use the Discord (which anyone can join) to remind participants of important dates.

However, email is the fastest way to communicate with the mods. If you have any questions or are having trouble communicating with your artist/author, please do email us! Our email is wipbigbang@gmail.com. We will do our best to respond quickly.

What is the Reverse WIP Big Bang? Good question! This is a Big Bang with one goal in mind: to clean out your fanart/original art drafts folder. Any art that is of a digital or traditional means as well as fanvideos are eligible. If you’ve started word on an art/fanvid project and want an impetus to finish, maybe with a fic written in honor of it, now is your chance!

Do I need a Livejournal/Dreamwidth/AO3/etc. account to participate? No! You don’t have to have an account on anything to participate, though you will need to have somewhere to post your finished work. Having one or more accounts will help for you to follow what is going on with the bang (we crosspost to Dreamwidth and Tumblr and heavily use our Discord server at the moment), but they are not required to participate. You can always leave comments anonymously or with an opensource ID.

As this is a trial, run, however, we ask that you limit yourself to three unfinished projects that are at least 10% complete upon sign-up. I figured I would explain this a little bit just in case there's still confusion about it. We're going to possibly make changes next round, but for now we're keeping things as usual since it's so close to the actual submissions process.

1 - WHAT SNIPPETS ARE: Basically, what the submission are are three sections of your fics, between 500 and 1500 words (please make sure you hit the minimum, and if you go a little over the maximum that's fine) each that best represent sections you would like to have made into art. This is just in case your artist can't read your whole fic.

2 - WHAT WILL BE INCLUDED ON THE FORM: The snippets are only part of the form. Each fic will have a header that will be posted for the artists to choose from (we couldn't include snippets in the posts because Dreamwidth has post word limits and I'd need to make, like, ten posts to host all the pieces and the snippets; we had 227 responses to check in #2 so I'm pretty sure I'll have to make multiple posts this round for all the art, and the fewer I have to make the less confusing it is for artists). It will have the title, the rating, AO3 content warnings, a space for other warnings (both serious and fun), a summary and any authors notes you include for the artists to be aware of.

3 - HOW ART CLAIMS WORK EXACTLY: When I post the list of headers, they're listed first alphabetically by fandom (numbers first, then A - Z, then symbols), and then in each fandom alphabetically by title. Each header is given a number that the artists will submit in a form as their choice in fic.

Normally it's done with 1 choice in round 1, 2 choices in round 2, 3 choices in round 3 and as many more as an artist can handle in round 4, with each round lasting a week. We may switch it up a little this round because we're looking at having twice as many works as last year, so artists could conceivably pick 2 choices in round 1, 3 in round 2, and as many as they can handle in a two week long round 3.

Once an artist has chosen their fic(s), I double check that it's still available (fics are claimed on a first come, first served basis) and send an email to the author with the artist's name and email address, and I also send an email to the artist with the author's name, email address and the snippets.

If an artist reads the snippets and decides they can't do the story, I but the fic back into claims and send the author an email letting them know. This happens very rarely during art claims; usually it's between claiming and posting when artists let us know they're unable to complete the work. In that case, I will make a cover and a wallpaper for the fic.

Any fics left unclaimed at the end of claim rounds is offered a digital fic cover and wallpaper from Mod Ragna, no matter the fandom or rating (please note that I will try to fins someone else who can do non-con/dubcon fics, as they are triggering to me...I had an instance a few rounds back where it wasn't warned for and let's just say I had a bad week after I read the fic). I may bring back my form that users fill out with favorite colors, patterns, images they want used, etc. as I'm expecting quite a few more fics to make art for this round.

We just got a great ask at the WIPBB email about co-authored fics and if they're allowed. The answer is yes, you can absolutely sign up with a co-authored fic and two (or more) authors. Just list the other person not doing the sign-up in the author's notes (name and email) at sign-up. Then if you do check-ins, use the User ID and list them in the authors notes again for each non-mandatory and mandatory check-in you do.

I just had two asks to the mod email that I think more people would be interested in knowing the answers to:

IN REGARDS TO CO-AUTHORS, they are totally allowed. One of the authors should be in charge of filling out official forms, and in the notes section of each for you fill out (so sign-up, the four optional check-ins, snippet submission*, rough draft check-in and the posting check-in form), list the co-author’s name in the notes and let us know this fic has two authors.

* On the snippet submission form, include your co-author’s email address in the notes so I can send both authors the artists information if your fic is claimed.

IN REGARDS TO ARTIST SIGN-UPS, that doesn’t happen until the snippets are submitted and I put the first art claims form up on Dreamwidth. So you have some time before it’s time to sign up for art.

My apologies for posting this so close to snippet submission. I had the Coronavirus vaccine on Friday afternoon and I basically slept until 4 PM today. But this is a small FAQ based on questions I was emailed and saw on the Discord, which should help explain the process better.

How It All Works:

Basically, there will be a similar form to the check-in going up on the 1st, except this one is four pages long. The first page is e-mail, check-in ID and then a box to indicate you're checking in. This is just like the check-in forms, basically.

The second page of the form is where you'll put story information. There's sections for a title of your fic, the fandom(s), main pairings, characters involved, the AO3 warning list, a space for extra warnings (this is where you'd put stuff like underage, incest, squicks, etc), and rating. Please fill out as much of it as you can; this will be publicly posted on the artist's claim page, along with the story summary, which is also on this page.

The third page is where you'll leave the snippets. There's three paragraph boxes, and you just copy/paste the snippets right into the form. We prefer they be the actual text from the fic, but if you have a scene synopsis we'll take it. We do need the snippets to be R rated and under, so nothing too explicit, but some sensual stuff is allowed. Not all our artists are over the age of 18, we know that, so we ask for it to be as family friendly as possible. Max length for the snippets is 1,500 words, but if you're a little over it's okay.

The fourth page is just for notes to the mods, if there's anything you want to let us know (just like the check-ins had). If there's any other notes you want us to leave your artist, in case they choose not to communicate with you, this is the best place to do so.

If you don't want art, you don't have to submit anything, just wait until the rough draft check-in and let us know you're still participating. On that check-in you don't have to send us anything (we'll take your word you're 80% done) but it is a mandatory one, so if you miss it we have to drop you from the BB.
