Story Title: music (when soft voices die)
Fandom: ASTRO (K-pop RPF)
Link(s): Story on AO3Summary: Part five in a series. Park Minhyuk is a song-eater, a creature who can drain life-force from other people through the music they make. He’s hiding where no one will think to look for him, as an idol, because everyone believes song-eaters are female and cannot sing. Cha Eunwoo is a Songbird, a trained hunter of song-eaters. He, too, is leading a double life as an idol. Kim Myungjun became an idol to avenge the death of his older sister, who was killed by a song-eater when he was a child. For years, Minhyuk has been in love with Myungjun, and now they're finally together, but the secret he's keeping could tear them - and their entire team - apart. Unfortunately, he's not the only one keeping secrets, and as the truth unravels, so does everything Minhyuk has worked for his entire life.

When I Started: I started this series back in February but knew I had to tell this bigger story for the universe to really work. It was a really cool universe and I wanted to do something with it and I really liked the concept. Also, the concept was inspired by my baby girl, who likes to try to eat my phone when it’s playing music. She used to try to eat this little flashlight and my husband was joking with her and asked her if the photons tasted good so when she tried to eat my phone the music went all wobbly I asked her if the music tasted good and an idea was born and of course an Astro song was playing and I had to write at least one story inspired by my baby, okay?
How I Lost My Shit: Truth was, I never really had it. As a rule, if I don’t know the ending scene for a story when I’m tooling around with it, I don’t ever really pursue it. I’m a pantser, not a planner as a writer, but I have to know the end; that’s key for me. Also this story covered a truly massive amount of time, story-wise. Initial drafts started when Minhyuk was about thirteen, but he doesn’t get together with Myungjun till he’s twenty-one, so that would have been a lot of time to fill, so for a whole month I didn’t touch this universe at all, and then a friend pointed me in the direction of the WIP BB, and I liked the concept of the AU and the challenge so much, I thought...let me try it. Let me see if I can just write a story even if I don’t know the end.
How I Finished My Shit: I’m not really sure how. I busted out about 93k words in July and I’m pretty sure all of them were for this story and I’ve never worked so intensely on just one story before and there were a lot of panicked Zoom calls to my writing friends who don’t even listen to K-pop who listened to me talk my way through all my options for plot lines and endings before I just went for one. One thing that really inspired me was the amazing art. Selenic kept sending me previews of the art and I was like well, I better pony up something worthy of that art. And here we are. My longest story to date. Quite possibly my biggest feat of world-building to date. The series isn't finished by a long shot but this story is and that's what counts.
